Bedroom Sanctuary

My treehouse nest!! I wish it was really a #treehouse!

I moved into this house in June of 2018, a couple weeks before my husband and I got married! It’s been coming together bit by bit since then, becoming more home-y, more cozy, and more “ours!”

I’ve been slowly picking things out from thrift shops and Facebook marketplace, bringing my love of #thrifting, #reducereuserepurposerecycle and my personal style together to create a sanctuary for my big, blended, fostering family.

My bedroom is my place to escape the noise and relax. Except when the noise comes to relax with me!! I wanted to create my dream room, which really involves a treehouse but this is close enough 💚💚💚

The curtains were free from the previous owners, as well as the awesome built-in shelves where we keep some of our book collection and…. my shoe collection 😉

My dresser was purchased from a yard sale when we first got married. The drawers are tiny, but thanks to @MarieKondo I am able to “file” all my pants, leggings, skirts (and unmentionables) there.

Next to that is my filing cabinet from K-Mart clearance when they were going out of business. That is followed by the antique chest from my grandparents- where I keep my socks and swimsuits, and hang my robes and next day’s outfits. (When I’m not on medical leave, living in sweats 😂)

The corner table and tv table are a set I scored from a friend who was moving! The corner table is for my bags: hiking backpack, big purse for shopping, and church bag with bible. I have a couple baskets I got for free from friends where I put extra stuff for hiking/outings, like flashlights, rain gear, picnic set, etc.

My mom found the #CostaRica poster board at a thrift shop and bought it for me since it’s one of my favorite places, and the country where my son was born! This was the #bedroominspo for my treehouse/jungle-ish theme. She also gave us the sign above the bed that says “love you more…,” which contributes to the romantic feel that every couple’s bedroom needs.

My bedroom mini-makeover started when my hubby bought extra Christmas lights and I decided to hang them in the bedroom, giving me such a magical, ethereal, romantic vibe!! I decided to expand on that, and the jungle bungalow theme.

I bought the zebra stripe storage bench on Facebook marketplace, which is a great place to hide laundry that I don’t want to put away!! I also keep a couple extra pillows and blankets for the kids when they come up.

People with the genetic condition I have, called Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome (EDS) are nicknamed “Zebras.” I haven’t quite figured out why yet, I’ve only been recently diagnosed and am working my way into some support groups. I digress…

I’ve had my “bed in a bag” set for five years. It’s a relic of my single mom working for $9/hour days. It was chosen by price, not by aesthetic.

It’s black sheets, which as a woman is nice, in case you spring a leak 🤦🏼‍♀️ and black/white flower comforter which is not ugly, but not my style. But hey, $25 for sheets, comforter, and pillowcases??

I decided on a duvet cover, to keep the comforter in use, since our cape cod bedroom gets really cold with drafts around the built-in shelves!! We have an electric fireplace that helps, but our last electric bill was $399 😳 (Yeah we should do something about it, but we haven’t gotten around to that yet…) AND IT’S SO WARM FOR CAMPING 💚🏕🤩

I wanted something cozy and aesthetically pleasing. I’m a very tactile person and I love the feel of luxurious, romantic fabrics!! But I also was budgeting for under $100 for a duvet cover and an extra set of sheets.

So, I looked at Amazon. (Links below 👇🏻) Don’t hate me, I’m trying to quit buying from them for ethical reasons!! But, we have a lot of kids and a budget to keep.

I was able to find a sheet set, extra pillow cases (for my billion pillows), and duvet cover for around $120ish +tax. So, a little over budget but not bad!

The duvet cover is a top seller and I can see (feel) why!! It is furry-ish on one side and ultra soft, velvety, and cozy on the flip side!! This is a great bonus for me since I hate top sheets!! It’s sooo nice having that inside part directly on my skin!!

I chose green to tie in my treehouse/jungle theme. Plus, it’s my favorite color. Green is known to be a calming, earthy color that can help the mind relax and unwind. It also gives my dark, one window room a more lively feel since not many plants survive in here 😳

It didn’t come with pillow cases but I bought a set of two, to match. It’s a little inconvenient that they have zippers down the middle on the back side, which is the soft, velvety side where I like to lay my head. The furry side tickles my nose since I’m a tummy/side sleeper.

I chose the sheets by style, but also by price. It was the most affordable animal print I found, and I love the patchwork style including leopard, cheetah, and zebra prints!

I wasn’t sure if I would like the texture since I really wanted a silky feel. It’s an interesting texture and I decided I do like it! I was also happy that it came with two king size pillow cases!

It’s so comfy and cozy in my bedroom now that everyone wants to snuggle in there 24/7. It’s perfect for our bedtime reading with the kiddos, and my hubby is even taking more naps up there instead of the couch!! 😂

I put this here on accident and don’t know how to remove it 🤷🏼‍♀️
